TrailUK is built by a single developer for the UK green laning community. We collect only what we need to make the app work, and we never sell your data to third parties.
1. Who We Are
TrailUK is an iOS and Android application developed and operated by Wayne Basson ("we", "us", "our"). If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at trailuk.feedback@gmail.com.
2. What Data We Collect
Account Information
When you create a TrailUK account, we collect:
- Email address (used for login and account communications)
- Display name or username
- Optional profile information, privacy choices, club memberships and vehicle details
- Authentication-provider identifiers when you choose a supported third-party sign-in option
Location Data
TrailUK uses your device's location to:
- Show lanes near you on the map
- Provide requested navigation, active-plan guidance and hazard context
- Record your trip route after you explicitly start a recording session
- Create or respond to a TrailUK Assist request when you choose to use Assist
- Share a live position with participants after you opt in during a Club Drive
Nearby-lane discovery uses location while the app is in use. If you explicitly start recording or navigation, TrailUK may continue using exact location while that session is active, including while the screen is off or another app is visible, until you pause or stop it. The resulting GPS route may be uploaded to your account for drive history and lane-data quality. TrailUK does not start continuous background location when you have not started a feature that needs it.
TrailUK Assist initially exposes a rough request area to eligible responders. Exact requester location is shared only through the Assist sharing flow. Responder location is optional, is cleared immediately when the responder disables it, stops being used for matching after 24 hours without a fresh update, and is then cleared by a recurring cleanup. Optional Assist photos are private and delivered to authorised request participants through links that expire after five minutes. Club Drive live location is optional, visible only to authorised participants during a live drive, removed when sharing stops or the drive ends, and expires after ten minutes without a fresh update.
Trip and Activity Data
When you record a drive, we store:
- The route GPS data for the recorded trip
- Which lanes you have marked as driven, timestamps, direction and drive metrics
- Saved lanes, folders, plans, GPX imports and contribution evidence you choose to upload
User-Submitted Content
You may submit:
- Condition reports, lane reviews, questions, answers, route corrections and lane photos
- Hazard pin locations and descriptions, lane submissions and recorded evidence
- Profile information, friend requests, clubs, events, direct messages and Club Drive chat
- Content reports, feature requests and moderation information
- TrailUK Assist requests, responder updates, messages and optional photos
This content is stored in our database and may be visible to other members or moderators according to the feature, your relationship with those members and your profile settings. A friend activity summary does not expose the raw GPS trace stored for your own drive history.
Device and Usage Data
TrailUK collects limited first-party product and reliability events, such as which feature was opened, whether an operation succeeded and app/session timing. These events are designed not to contain message text, photo contents or exact location. We may also process app version, operating-system family, release channel and diagnostic information needed to operate and support the app.
If you enable notifications, TrailUK stores the push registration needed to reach your Apple device or Android Firebase installation, together with your notification choices. Providers may rotate these identifiers.
Subscription Data
If you use TrailUK Plus, TrailUK processes the store product, purchase-token reference, entitlement status and lifecycle events needed to verify and restore access. Apple or Google handles payment-card details; TrailUK does not receive your full card number.
3. How We Use Your Data
- To operate and maintain your account
- To provide maps, saved plans, navigation, trip recording, weather and hazard context
- To send account-related emails (e.g. password reset)
- To power the rank and progression system
- To enable social, club, contribution, reporting and moderation features
- To match TrailUK Assist requests with opted-in nearby responders
- To verify purchases, prevent abuse, diagnose failures and improve product reliability
4. Data Storage and Security
Your account data is stored using Supabase database, authentication, file-storage and server-function services. Access controls, including row-level security, restrict data according to account ownership, feature participation, friendship, moderation role and public-content rules.
Passwords are not stored by TrailUK in plain text. Sensitive retry queues held on your device are encrypted and excluded from normal device backup. No internet-connected service can be guaranteed completely secure, but we use access controls, scoped credentials, short-lived links and account-isolated storage to reduce risk.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with advertisers.
Your data may be shared with:
- Supabase — our backend database and authentication provider
- Resend — our transactional email provider (receives your email address for sending account emails)
- Apple — iOS distribution, supported sign-in, purchases, testing and push delivery
- Google Play — Android distribution, purchases and purchase verification
- Firebase Cloud Messaging — Android push registration and delivery
- Mapbox — map styles, tiles and related map requests used by supported map screens
- Open-Meteo — coordinates needed to provide weather context you request
Providers receive only the data needed for their role and also operate under their own privacy terms. We may disclose data if required by law, to investigate abuse, or to protect the rights and safety of members and others. We do not sell personal data or share it with advertisers.
6. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your account and associated data
- Change community visibility and practical notification categories in TrailUK Settings
- Withdraw location or notification permission in iOS or Android system settings
- Delete your account in TrailUK or submit a deletion request from our public Delete Account page
To exercise these rights, use the available in-app controls or contact us at trailuk.feedback@gmail.com. We may need to verify that you control the relevant account. We aim to respond within 30 days.
7. Data Retention
Account, library, recording, profile and contribution data is generally retained while your account is active or until you remove it using an available control. Assist responder coordinates expire after 24 hours without a fresh update. Assist photos that are not attached to a request are queued for deletion after 24 hours; photos attached to a closed request are unlinked and queued for deletion after 30 days. Live Club Drive coordinates expire after ten minutes without a fresh update and are removed when sharing stops or the drive ends. Raw password-reset abuse-prevention records containing the requested email address and source IP expire within 24 hours.
When account deletion is confirmed, TrailUK removes attributable database rows, account-owned stored files and the authentication identity. Product events may remain only after the account identifier has been removed so they can no longer be linked through TrailUK to the deleted profile. Limited security, fraud, legal or moderation records may be retained where necessary and are minimised or de-identified when the account identifier is no longer required. Provider backups may take a limited period to cycle out.
8. Children's Privacy
TrailUK is intended for adults and is not directed at children. Driving decisions, live-location sharing and member-generated content are adult features. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes via the app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
